The Iconostasis, which holds the icons and the veil, serves as the gate of heaven.

Veil (Altar Curtains)

  • The Veil, or Altar Curtain, hangs at the entrance of the sanctuary and is typically made of red velvet, embroidered with a large cross in the center, an image of Our Lord Jesus Christ, or the church’s patron saint.

  • As a symbol of the gate of heaven, the Veil separates the Holies (the church nave) from the Holy of Holies (the sanctuary), where the sacraments are offered.
